I've been using the StumbleUpon extension for Firefox and I think it might be yet another good way to spread the word about AppleTalker. Hey, AppleTalker already has one "thumbs up"!

It's probably because you gave "thumbs up" to something other than the main forum page, which is what I gave a "thumbs up" up. Try it again by giving the main forum page a "thumbs up".

Edit:

It seems to be interpreting http://www.appletalker.com/forum/index.php and http://www.appletalker.com/forum/index.php?req=main as different pages. That's kinda silly.

i did.  i "thumbs-upped" the frontpage http://www.appletalker.com and the forum page http://www.appletalker.com/forum/

BTW - it's a shame they have a 'windoze' category, but not a mac one [in the registration section].  we'd have more chance of getting "stumbled upon"  if there was.

Madra,

Another suggestion-- How about sending news of AppleTalker to other Mac news sites, like MacInTouch and maybe even MacNN. Well, at least the former.  A new Mac forum is Mac news, and MacInTouch and some other Mac news sites have no forums, so it's not competition to them. If I were you I'd let them know about AppleTalker.

good idea.   [the macintouch bit of it, anyway  ].   i emailed their press releases address the following.......

Quote by us:
the  appletalker discussion forum was founded at the beginning of february by a breakaway group of core long-time macNN discussion forum users in direct response to a decision by macNN management to introduce intelliTXT spam advertising into their discussion forum users' posts, without any consultation with the forum members themselves.

this is a practice wich could never happen at appletalker.  in a first for a major apple discussion forum, the appletalker discussion forum  is founded on the principles of democracy and co-operative ownership. all major decisions as to the direction appletalker takes and the running of the site itself are discussed openly in the appletalker  discussion forum and policies are decided according to the majority opinion.  [recent examples of this democracy in action included members deciding - which software the board used, whether a language filter should be employed, design of the appletalker logo and moving the site to a higher spec server].

appletalker is the first apple mac discussion forum to explicity state its recognition of the fact that productive regular visitors to a discussion forum effectively write the majority of the content of that website on a voluntary basis and should be appreciated for so doing, rather than [as was the case at macNN] treated almost as troublesome intruders by the management and expected to feel "grateful" for being allowed to use the discussion forum at all.  at appletalker forum we promise never to lose sight of the fact that without our members' contributions, we wouldn't have a discussion forum in the first place.

any  member of the appletalker discussion forum, can expect to be treated with respect as an equal and valued for the input they make to the site.  you'll find no marauding moderatorss [sic - oops! freudian slip!], settling personal vendettas or arrogant management at appletalker.   all we ask in return is that users of the appletalker forum treat fellow 'appletalkers' with the same respect as they will receive from us.

which most of you will recognise as a re-hash of the article posted on the main site page...  which is in turn a rehash of the original announcement on the forum.... which was pretty much a rehash of the PM i sent you all to invite you here in the first place.

well,  they do say recycling is good for the environment!

I submitted AppleTalker to digg.

http://digg.com/apple/AppleTalker

Click the "digg it" button to move it up the list and help bring more visitors to the site. :)

I dugg as well but I'm not going to comment lest we make it too obvious we are promoting ourselves.

another idea would be, for those of us with del.icio.us accounts, to add appletalker to your bookmarks there.   i used the following keywords:

apple appletalker mac powermac powerbook ibook ipod macbook macintel discussion forum OSX jaguar panther tiger

Hey guys,

Coincidentally while doing a search, I found this forum. They're a small group-- I only found ten members listed. It seems like these folks were trying to do what we are. They even have a main page much reminiscent of our own. But it seems like they're growth has stalled and their forums are not as active as they'd want. I was wondering if maybe we (or you, Madra) could offer them to "join forces" with us and come over here instead of each of us trying to go at it alone. I'm not that sure about their quality, you'll have to check.

In all honestly, though I think we should be looking for more members, we should strive for quality above all else. I'm not going to act until there is some discussion of this. Still, it might not be a bad idea to expand this idea to other smaller groups of people who are trying to make their own forums which are compatible with AppleTalker's founding ideals.

The member list dealie there only list a small number of users starting at the letter A, you can use the menu to select another letter and see more users. At the bottom of the main page it says 202 registered users. That being said the place looks a bit stagnant.

i'm all for inviting other folk from as varied a range of sources as possible.  after all, we dinnae want to be forever an off-shoot or a sub-set of macNN.  that said, i think it's probably best if we invite people that we have some knowledge of.  after all, every board of a decent size has their trolls and troublemakers and without spending some time on the board, it's not always easy to spot who these are, on a cursory read through a few threads.

as regards "merging" with another board, again a fine idea in principle - double or triple the membership overnight.  but i think that, in principle, it wouldnae be so easy.  for a start, one of the boards would have to 'absorb' the other one and i could see that causing deadlock for a start as both boards would wnat theirs to be the one that absorbed the other one.  that's apart from a myriad of other problems which could arise - what software to use?... whether to have mods or not? [in spite of what you said about mac user talk being "like us", i couldnae help but notice that the first post/announcement on their board is a fairly long list of "rules" whereas our 'top' anouncement is more a declaration of founding principles]... which domain to use?...  even something as obscure as what to do if two people had the same username on the two boards, could cause ructions.

it's a tricky one!
