Subject: updating currency conversion rates completely bollocksed calculator
i've just tried updating the OSX calculator's currency conversion rates...

[Image: http://www.appletalker.com/grafix/calccurrency00.png]

after calculator had finished downloading the new rates, i got presented with the following, instead of the usual compact window which lists the changes. note - this image is about a quarter actual size.  this panel was actually so wide it spanned two monitors! the "OK" button is not visible coz it's on the second monitor:

[Image: http://www.appletalker.com/grafix/calccurrency02.png]

likewise- now when i try to select my source or destination currencies, the popup menu is stupidly wide...

[Image: http://www.appletalker.com/grafix/calccurrency01.png]

and whatever currencies i select aren't visible on the menus after the selection has been made [presumably because the text is shifted off to the side]...

[Image: http://www.appletalker.com/grafix/calccurrency04.png]

and to top it all off, the calculations are completely out too.  here i've just converted í¢â€šÂ¬100 into 킣킣킣s.  it should come out at somewhere between í‚£66 and í‚£68...

[Image: http://www.appletalker.com/grafix/calccurrency03.png]

WTF?! -

I just tried it.
I successfully converted euros into pounds and had no trouble. It worked perfectly. No weird double wide screens, the conversion was accurate, all was good. Another example of Madra "the stupidest man....."
Then I updated the exchange rates.
I now have the exact same problem.
WTF is right.

so it's not just me then!

o well, i've reported it as a bug to apple [no.  4893706].  mind you - judging by their reaction last time, they'll probably just say it's my fault and mark it a "closed"  :brick:

Obviously, it's a proud American calculator. We don't need any of your Euro or Pound crap!

Subject: Reverse Conversion

The Calculation is actually being made in reverse (converting from the "to currency" to the "from currency"). So í‚£100 is converted to í¢â€šÂ¬148.87. In order to convert from í¢â€šÂ¬ to í‚£ select from Pound Sterling to Euro and for í‚£100 result is í¢â€šÂ¬67.12.

Lookkee here:
Crack open the calculator plist ~/LibraryApplication Support/Calculator/FinancialRates.plist with something like MS Word.
See all those spaces between the <string> Currency Name </string>?
That is part of the problem. But even if you delete the spaces, the conversion boxes are the right size but you still can't see the currency.

Someone has attacked this problem, but

There are only 3 currencies and the Euro is not one of them.

The person who did it seems to have a keyboard with no shift key.

The rates are a few days old.

we heard you the first time!

i'm still getting the list with all the currencies [as before] however, now when i do my í¢â€šÂ¬100 to 킣킣킣s conversion, i get í‚£0 as the answer.  wow! - i didnae think the euro had devalued that much!

the irony of this all is that making a working currency converter is the first beginner's lesson posted in apple's getting started with cocoa documentation.  somebody at apple HQ should be extremely embarrassed about this!

Personally, I think the devalued Apple Euro is better for me anyway, since I can get some more flow when I go visit across the pond. I mean, Apple could be on to something here-- hard drive manufacterers one day just decided to redefine the Gigabyte form 1024 MBs to 1000 MB, so why not the Euro?
